An excursion to the rural churches, built around the seventeenth century and dedicated to the saints whose name they bear, will allow you to get to know their architecture and discover the beauty of the surrounding area. Around the churches it will be possible to visit “sas cumbessias”, small houses used by the faithfuls pilgrims to live and sleep during religious events.
The church of San Pantaleo, built in 1668, is characterized by its vault of juniper reeds and beams. The feast in honor of the saint is celebrated on the last Saturday of May: the mass is followed by refreshments, music, and traditional dances.
The church of Nostra Signora degli Angeli was born in a wide plateau of the Cedrino Valley, surrounded by many “cumbessias”, some of which have been destroyed over the years. The feast, celebrated every year on July 27, is characterized by the presence of white sheets on which meat, wine and cheeses are disposed in honor of the saint.
Rio Frumeneddu
The excursion on the Rio Frumeneddu is a unique and immersive experience in the most unspoiled nature of the area around Canales. The river has its source in the forest of Montes, Orgosolo, and continues its course through the territory of Urzulei, through the Gorroppu Canyon, until it flows into the waters of the Cedrino. Myrtle, rosemary, and wild mint perfume its course, which can be traveled along almost its entire length, characterized by white limestone rocks and suggestive shadow galleries created by oleanders.
Guano cave
Along the river banks an opening in the limestone wall is called the Guano Cave, because it is a place rich in bat droppings, used in the past for its known fertilizing properties. The cave develops in height and on several levels and can be entirely visited by the most experienced with ropes and speleological equipment.
Source of Su Gologone
Su Gologone is a marvelous karst source at the foot of Mount Uddè, in the territory of Oliena, and represents the last point of the upstream course of the Cedrino river. It looks like a small lake hidden between two high walls of dolomite rock, where the crystalline water is colored with shades ranging from emerald to turquoise or deep blue, depending on the light and sun exposure. The excellent visibility conditions and the depth of the waters represent an irresistible challenge for numerous speleo-divers from all over the world.
